Friday's lost entry

Yesterday I went to bed early - for me - and completely knackered but happy to have seen Monty get his 5 wicket haul. Somewhat later than he should have. He should have played in Adelaide and probably Brisbane too. Giles is a smashing chap, I'm sure, but Monty is mentioned in the same breath as Warne and if you have a choice between the bloke who can get wickets and the bloke who may keep the run rate down and bats at number 8 you pick the wicket taker. If you want to win. What is it with England playing for the draw? Recipe for disaster.

I was man alone last night, so dinner was a chunk of Christmas cake and a carrot. Sal was back over east watching Sydney FC take on Perth Glory in what is increasingly not called soccer here in Aus. We'd been offered a couple of free tickets to a corporate box with our former colleagues from St. George Bank. I was tempted but my heart was not in it and I declined. I like to feel a bit of pasion at the football and if I can't then the appeal is not strong. Take me to an England - or an Australia - match, AFC Wimbledon on ocassion, the Wimbledon (R.I.P) of old was great. And put me in the stands or on the terraces. Corporate box watching a couple of new world teams? Leaves me a little cold. Especially the corporate bit, but that is because I am one of the last of a dying breed and I need to get with the times. An yes, my World Cup tickets were all courtesy of sponsors. So Sal took her (employment) agent to the football and then stayed the night at Mara's, for old time sake. I crashed out and woke up late - for me - therefore confirming what I suspected. I was knackered.

Day two on the bike starts with light rain to test my ability on skinny slick tyres on damp roads. Easy. A little better off of the Bridge today; I headed through the Rocks and across Circular Quay. But I am still making what is probably an easy part of the trip more difficult than it need. If I screw it up again I'll look at a map.

Considering how much sleep I had last night - not a lot by general standards, but loads by mine - why have I spent all morning yawning? I attribute it to boredom, having now to scratch for tasks to occupy myself at what I euphemistically call 'work', while IBM continue to not deliver servers I should be working on. This contract is starting to do my head in. I don't need a lot of work, but so little? Maybe it will all arrive at once and I'll be rushed off my feet. I doubt that. A worrying development, though I am not sure who should be most worried, is the news that implementation dates for the stuff I am 'working' on have been put back. Potentially to way after my contract has ended. Right now the word 'extension' fills me with dread, as the words 'no thanks' should do my employer.

Friday afternoon was made more tolerable by a long lunch at the NSW Leagues Club Thai restaurant. It was the departments Christmas lunch, so 30 DBAs. The tables segregated themselves; I was on the Anglo background beer drinking (though I was on water) cricket watching table. Behind us was the Asian orange juice drinking don't give a toss about the cricket table, and over a bit was the old mainframe guys. I'm all for integration, but given the choice humans will, over and again, volunteer to segreagate ourselves.
