the end of the weekend

I did have that jog. It was overcast and rained and was a fair bit cooler than usual, but I suspect it was cooler only by the degrees of lack of direct sun. But cooler is cooler and it was good to have a run in the rain. I managed a little over 1hr 20 so figure that is good for 18km, maybe a bit more. Dunno. I've not gotten the hang of Sydney distances as I did with London distances. Back in Blighty I knew how far on place was from another. Over here I am running to time and hoping the distances take are of themselves.

But the thing of note from yesterday's run is a triggered memory. As I ran in the cooler afternoon I was passng through areas of warmer and more humid air. They were quite noticable; I'd be runing alongside a fence and then for no apparent reason the temperature would jump and then fall about 20ft further along. That triggered a very specific memory...cue Scooby Doo wobbly picture and wobbly sound...When I was far younger, and before I realised it is better to swim with fish than to catch them, I used to do a lot of fishing. My favourite spot was Mytchett Farm, a 40acre site with a 25acre gravel pit. It was pretty well left to go to nature, not particulalry cared for but a great spot to fish. I would be found there most weekends, day and night. The pit had been completed just before I was born, so as I walked around the lake I was walking through maybe 15years of regrowth, a lot of it low scrub. There was a path that led from the car park to a small bay, a short cut through the scrubland that avoided having to walk along the path around the lake shore. I say 'was' because I think the area has been redeveloped - ruined more like - with a golf driving range. Quite often, when I took that path, I'd walk thorugh noticably cooler patches of air. And it is that walk, along that one path, that I was reminded of yesterday as I ran along Penshurst Street. Happy days. I think I developed my love or sunrises there too. Watching the sun rise over a flat-calm lake surface with mist hanging over it and fish gently breaking the surface. Idylic stuff.

If this link works you can see that the scrubland has been tidied up. Click satellite and the the lake is slightly left and below the arrow. Bloody gold driving range development bollocks. Can't be too harsh though; a mate of my Dad owns the ite, so I guess he can do what he likes with it. Good to see he didn' fill the lake in...or hadn't when this shot was taken. Somewhat concerned that the map has no lake and the picture does...maybe the picture is old and the map newer? Dunno.
