Apparently Town Hall station has, for the past 7 years, failed fire safety standards. Seven years. But two years into the seven management - a wonderful word, so often used instead of twats - decided they should increase the capacity of the station, inevitably delaying the improvement in passenger safety. Real smart. They obviously didn't hear about the Kings Cross fire and what can happen to people underground when a fire starts. Or didn't care. Or maybe management decided there would be no fire. Whatever. And on fire safety, the study said that in 2001 "Parsons Brinckerhoff determined that Town Hall cannot currently be fully evacuated in the morning and evening peaks within times stipulated by the Standards for Fixed Guideway Transit and Passenger Rail Systems".
In 2003, RailCorp moved to install fire escape stairs at a cost of $50 million, but management instead began planning a bigger renovation to substantially increase the station's capacity.
For the record, there are still some wooden escalators in Sydney; definitely in Wynyard station, not sure about Town Hall. And with the on-off plans for a new station in the CBD, will Town Hall ever get it's fire escapes? And - dur - is there no legislation that demands safety standards reach a certain level? Obviously not...
The New South Wales government is hopeless unable to get transport right in this City.
