What a shame the world is missing an opportunity to dramatically cut carbon emissions. The global credit crisis has slashed demand and production of stuff - lots if it shit - across the globe. Do we take the opportunity to assess the state of the planet, see what we can do to move forward with a policy shift that will lessen human impact upon global climate while addressing unemployment and hardship?
Er, no. We MUST protect the motor industry! We MUST spend our way out of trouble! Consume or perish!
We really are a stupid collective. Seems to be heaps of cash available at the moment (OK, so I think the US are simply printing some of it...) and we could take a giant step forward. But we won't.
And the irony? Once the credit crisis is over - when we're back merrily spending money we don't have - then we'll look at carbon trading schemes and other politically safe, media friendly, cash making and probably ineffective ways to help the planet.
Heavy sigh.
