What does it mean when in the morning business report we are told that yesterday (or whenever) was a "good day on the markets"? In purely financial terms a good day means money made and as there is a finite sum of money that means that others have lost. Is that a good thing? Not sure. If Mr. Local look-after-your customers and provide a service for the love of it loses out to Mr. Rapacious big business then I'd think there is an argument that it has not been such a good day. Or lets think in not purely financial terms; maybe it's been a good day because we have found and exploited something that is not yet in the market. Maybe a bit more coal or oil, some more tropical hardwood or another natural resource. As long as that resource is renewable then I am sure everything is OK and we have had a good day. Hmmm.
And so to today. I had a god-awful run around the Domain at lunch time. Twenty minutes and I was knackered. Then after work, avoiding being run down with a load of other city folk by a taxi driver who shot a red light (Sydney must have the worlds worst cabbies), I got a bus to Newport, one of the Northern Beaches. The bus ride was a fairly painless hour and a bit and I got a seat about half way through. At Newport I met with Roger, the former owner of what is now my car. I'll get some pics taken soon, but intial impressions are that it is every bit as nice as I tyhought it was and I am sure we'll spend lots of happy kms together. Sally looked fairly impressed too when she, eventaully got to see it.
And now, in what for me is news of the day, I discover that Okwuchi has quit her job at Kiln. I am a little out of touch, but that may leave them with no DBAs. Well, no DBA specialists, I know a couple of guys there will have a bash and make a half decent job of it. Well, almost half (hahaha!)
