so this is Christmas
Going to run home tonight so got the bus in with Sal, got to town a little earlier than planned so got off a stop early and had a stroll. As I walked past DJs - that is what us locals call the department store David Jones - I heard the sound of Christmas songs, maybe carols, don't know or particulalrly care. The shop windows were decked out with typical seasonal panache. All fir trees, tinsel, dangly things and angelic kids. Some kick arse robots had managed to find their way to the window from the toy department too. So I expect to see reindeer and hear sleigh bells, I have already seen snow-globes, there will be fake holly and santa will be a fat bloke wrapped up warm in a fur trimmed red coat. You get the picture. But this is Sydney. The days are getting longer, Sunday will be a typical 29 degrees and sunny and this weekend I will be off to the beach. Apart from a christening on Sunday I do not expect to wear long trousers this weekend, and my feet will be thong clad - flip-flops to the English readers. Oh yeah, the England cricket team play their first tour match against a Prime Minister's II today. A day that started with me watching the lorikeets eating from the blossom on the tree outside of our balcony. I have a great deal of difficulty "doing" Christmas in these conditions. My brain knows it is Novemeber. My body thinks it is August. Maybe it would be different if the locals changed the imagery a bit? Certainly less confusing.
