Whenever I watch tennis with friends I find myself taking part in the 'modern tennis is boring' conversation that runs along the lines of too much slogging from the baseline, no rallies, players without personalities and everything was better in the past. The past is typically Connors, McEnroe, Borg et. al. The reason for more rallies in the past and an arguably more entertaining game is the players, their training and equipment were not as good as the players, equipment and training are now. If McEnroe could have hit the ball with the accuracy, power and consistency of Federer then he would have. He would not have eased up on the power or dropped his serve a bit short so his opponent had a greater chance of returning the ball and therefore a greater chance of beating him. Tennis luddidtes please get a grip.
The main reason tennis is boring today is Federer is so much better than anyone else. The outcome of most competitions is a foregone conclusion. That said, Gonzalez had a decent crack at him last night. In the first set. And it is the outcome that is boring, not the game. The game is belting, and will get better as players get better.
