Fight Club

It must be very tricky for Generals to fight a war these days. Australia has, tragically, lost a soldier in Afghanistan in what is technically, I guess, depending on your viewpoint and political bent, a war. One death. Since 2002. One death in five years. And it is front page news and headline news on the tele. A good thing I suppose, reassuring us that even when serving in a war you are very, very unlikely to die. But it means that the Generals cannot make any decisions that risks loss of life because, even in war, we now have no tolerance for it. That must be tricky. But hey, better that than the days of the Somme when in one day the British suffered 57470 casualties and 19240 deaths. Most of the British believed in that war...maybe that's the difference...
