d and m

Post dive JCJ, Sal (who had come along for an hour or so at the beach) and I headed for the Manly Interpolitan cafe for a late lunch and a chat.

Interesting thing number one. Chaz Webb. On the cafe walls were a few pics, presumably taken by Chaz, and a flyer letting us know how to get in touch with her (yes, her.) Nothing wrong with that. What is a bit wrong is the one-liner under a picture of a dog and another under a picture of a child. "Chaz Webb will take photos of your pets" and "Chaz Webb will take photos of your family." I find that a little disturbing. The certainty of that statement and the lack of anything to suggest I must commission Chaz. No, Chaz Webb will take pictures of my pets and of your family.

Scary huh?

Interesting chat too, starting with IVF and genetic markers and ending with a broader questioning of what is and what is not "natural" evolution. You don't like IVF and don't like genetic fiddling? But will you take an asprin? Will you put a plaster on a cut? So where is your line drawn under where science should start and stop? What edge will you allow science to give you and what will you object too? Interesting stuff...well, to me it is.

I came up with an analogy I am rather proud of too. Though, I am sure it is not new...Our society, human society, is just our termite mound. And in our mound there can only be a few queens (that'll be us well-to-do Westerners) but there are plenty of workers and drones (and that will be pretty well everyone else...Africa, India, China...) There was more and to do it justics I should really concentrate more on typing and less on National Treasure, one of those poor-yet-watchable Nicholas Cage movies I am easily hooked into.

So maybe later...
