Channel 10, who have a morning news program that looks all grown up and serious, but also have a stack of reality shows that show their true colours, started the week strongly. An item of shocked, awed, outrage telling us the CBA (Commonwealth Bank of Australia) had given a twenty thousand dollar loan to a Sudanese refugee who could not speak English and did not have a job. The loanee's character flaws were presented in that order. I'm not sure what we were supposed to make of that. No idea why a bank should not grant a loan to someone who cannot speak English, no idea what the risk profile of a person without a job might be, and unsure whether or not a refugee can get a loan. Recently there was some bad press about gang violence among the Sudanese community, so I can only assume that is why we needed to have the nationality pointed out. I couldn't help but think that the outrage I should feel, as an Australian (which I'm not) is that this person has the temerity to not speak English in Australia, and could even be...well...not white...Oh dear. Other than that - a complete non-story.
Shocking news from the UK that will shock no-one. Apparently Diana and Dodi died because they were not wearing seatbelts while a pissed bloke hammered the car they were passengers in into a wall. Well fuck-me backwards! I could have sworn Prince Phil had sent out a crack assassination squad to off the two of them. Well I never. Now Mr Al Fayed, while I sympathise with your loss, will you please stop spouting your mental rhetoric. It's jut not funny any more. Did he ever get his passport?
Dawn Fraser, Aussie Olympic legend and flag-thief, had her say on the tragic case of Nick D'Arcy who, almost immediately after claiming his place in the Australian Olympic team, may have it taken away from him. She reckons we should back him and he should go to Beijing. His crime? Well actually it is a crime. It is alleged that Simon Cowley, a former national swimmer, said something a tad out of order to which D'Arcy reacted by smashing him in the face, breaking his jaw, nose and cheek bone and leaving his victim needing two operations to fix his face. I'm with you Dawn; what on earth is the world coming to when a role model isn't allowed to cave-in the face of anyone who says something nasty. The bloody police aren't helping.
Yesterday police charged the 20-year-old with assault occasioning grievous bodily harm - the maximum penalty for which is 10 years' jail - and a second charge of assault. But he's an athlete! A celbrity! And he's an Aussie! Leave him alone...
