Weekends have become a bit of a logistics mare. I tend to make sure I am available to do whatever Sal wants to do whenever she wants which is typically "now." I slot my running in around it. Trouble is, without anything to work around I can struggle a bit to slot my miles in. I'm pretty easy to work out. I need to run 42.2km over the two days and take my dogs for a walk and, if at all possible, take the big fella for a swim. He's an Irish Water Spaniel and the clue is right there in the word "water." So going in to today all I knew was that Sal wanted me to be at Kylie and Paul's, where the girls are staying in fume-free relative luxury, at 09:30. So the plan was to run 14km before getting over to pick up Sal ad then walk the dogs.
Which was a fine plan with only a couple of minor drawbacks. The running was a couple of loops of the standard snoozetastic lap along the freeway bike path. And I head out at 05:30 which is just plain masochistic. I could moan about it being 8 degrees, but that would be a bit soft. I did, however, wear some long pants and a hat because I am soft Aussie Kev. (Slightly seriously - this far into the month I am running a bit low on fuel and do feel the cold a bit more than usual.) What can I tell you about the run? It was dark and dull and I did it. Got back as the painters got ready to get cracking, pulled some less stinky clothes on and head out to get a warming coffee. The dogs were good today; both of them decided they'd fetch their respective toys right back to my feet, allowing me to sit on a bench and get even colder. Highlight of the walk back was seeing Rowlf, a 34kg hound, looking pretty small next to a 2yr old great dane.
Got to Kylie;s place at 9:30 to find the Sal wanted to be back at 11:30 so the girls could sleep. So I threw down some breakfast and then, with the girls heading off to sleep I went and did my third lap to bring up the day's total of a little under 22km. The third lap was every bit as thrilling as the first two, but at least it was daylight and warmer. Some miles are just like that. Got a passer-by to take a somewhat self-indulgent picture of me.
Tonight I'm also staying at Kylie and Paul's place and I was on wine buying detail. instructions were a bottle of sparkling red and a sparkling white. I know bugger all about wine so the red was Banrock Station because I've had it before and it was cheap and the white was Sir James, which was a medal winner and reminded me of Sid James.
I am such a connoisseur.
